Harmful hidden Air Quality Dangers at home

It is often surprising to know how many harmful substances and chemicals can be found indoors that could be a threat to human health. Here are a few of the most common air quality dangers that are present in almost every modern household.

Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is a type of a chemical gas that is colorless, strong-smelling and flammable often produced industrially and used in building materials. It’s also a type of a chemical gas because of which individuals may experience adverse effects such as watery eyes, burning sensations in the eyes, nose, and throat, coughing, etc and also skin irritation. Even though formaldehyde is usually present in low levels indoors, it may be enough to affect those with severe sensitivities to chemicals and gases.

Mold

Even if your home is clean and the air you are breathing is clean, you may still have hidden patches of mold lurking on invisible corners of your home. It’s a type of fungus that consists of small organisms that grow in any damp, dark environment, making it difficult to breathe. These mold spores that you intake by default may not be very harmful but when they land on a corner of the wall or a damp spot indoors, they multiply in huge quantity. When mold is growing on the surface of the objects, mold spores can be released into the air in no time which can be inhaled by a human being.

Dry Air

Even if the air you breathe indoors is clean, you could still be suffering from the effects of low humidity. Dry air causes irritation of the mouth, throat and respiratory system. It also leads to headache and dry skin problems.

How to Check Your Indoor Air Quality

Consider using an AQI or PM meter in order to measure the indoor air quality. This meter measures particles, VOCs, humidity and other air quality characteristics that helps to measure how clean or polluted the air you breathe is. The AQI is usually measured on a scale of 0 to 500. The higher the AQI value, the more is the level of pollution leading to greater health issues. Some of the ways that can help improve your indoor air quality includes using an air purifier, keeping the windows open, use indoor air purifying plants, opt for essential oil diffusers, keep the pets groomed and clean the home with non-toxic chemical products.
